Kerala in a Merry Carnival: Onam

The Indian state of Kerala, known for its amazing backwaters, is now in a frenzy of feasting, games, dance, and shopping to celebrate Onam, the biggest harvest festival in India. The carnival began on September 20, 2013 and lasts for ten days. The tradition and culture of Kerala are brought into full play.

The Onam Festival is the most important festival in Kerala to mark the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali, who has long been revered by the people of Kerala. It is believed that he comes annually from the nether world to see his people living happily.

Most cities in Kerala such as Cochin (Kochi) are lit up with lights and displays of fireworks. And a Roral Parade happens in Kochi with more than 50 floats and 100 tableaux. Every home gets ready to welcome the King with intricately decorated floral carpets (Pookalam). People indulge in music, dances, snake boat races, and sumptuous Sadya feast (usually served on plantain leaves with more than 13 to 15 curries and traditional pickles, papadam and dessert).

Onam is also the biggest shopping festival in Kerala, particularly in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Most of the shops give mega discounts and special promotions. So if you come to Kerala during the festival, be prepared for bloody shopping!

This 10-Day Kerala with Backwaters & Wildlife can take you to Kerala.
